Choose a grinding wheel for rigid, heavy stock removal and beveling. Choose a fibre disc for fast coated-abrasive cutting and flat surface levelling with a required backing pad. Choose a flap disc when you want useful stock removal with more forgiving control and a smoother transition into blending.

What is a flap disc?

As the outer abrasive wears, more coated abrasive is exposed. The flexible contact area helps the operator blend a weld into the surrounding surface without the rigid feel of a bonded wheel.

What is a fibre disc?
A fibre disc—also written “fiber disc” in US searches—is a coated-abrasive disc bonded to a tough fibre backing. It mounts over a compatible backing pad, which supports the disc and affects how firmly it meets the work.
Fibre discs can provide fast cutting action, a broad grit range and good access across flat or gently contoured surfaces. They are useful when a shop wants to move through several grit stages or needs a thin abrasive that responds directly to pressure.
Important: A fibre disc is not a self-supporting grinding wheel. Match the disc, backing pad, retaining hardware, guard and maximum speed. Do not use the disc without its required backing pad.
What is a grinding wheel?
A Type 27 grinding wheel is a thick bonded-abrasive wheel with a depressed centre. Its rigid construction is suited to substantial weld removal, beveling, edge preparation and general stock removal where the first priority is removing metal.
The same rigidity that makes the wheel productive also increases the consequences of poor control. A rigid wheel can create deep marks, heat or remove parent metal quickly. Use the correct guard and flanges, maintain the working angle specified on the wheel or by its manufacturer, and do not twist or side-load a wheel contrary to its instructions.

Plan a two-step weld-finishing process
One abrasive does not need to perform every stage. A productive workflow often separates removal from refinement:
- Remove excess metal: use the appropriate grinding wheel, coarse fibre disc or coarse flap disc without cutting below the surrounding parent surface.
- Blend the transition: change to a flap disc or a finer fibre disc that can reduce the first scratch pattern.
- Prepare the specified finish: continue through the grit sequence or move to the surface-conditioning product required by the drawing, coating or appearance standard.
Test the sequence on scrap or a non-critical area when appearance, thickness or distortion is important. Thin sheet and stainless steel need especially careful heat and pressure control.
Safety and compatibility checks before grinding
- Inspect the abrasive, backing pad, flanges and guard before use.
- Confirm the abrasive and accessory maximum RPM meet or exceed the grinder's no-load speed.
- Use the guard and mounting hardware required for that specific abrasive type.
- Never use a fibre disc without its compatible backing pad.
- Do not use cracked, torn, distorted, dropped or water-damaged abrasive products.
- Wear the eye, face, hearing, respiratory and protective equipment required by the product instructions and workplace hazard assessment.
- Control combustible dust and grinding sparks using the facility's approved procedure.

Which abrasive removes welds the fastest?
A bonded grinding wheel or a coarse fibre disc can provide very fast stock removal, but the best choice depends on the weld size, access, required finish, operator control and product specification. A flap disc is often selected when removal and blending must happen in the same step.
Does a fibre disc need a backing pad?
Yes. A fibre disc must be used with a compatible backing pad, retaining hardware and guard. Match the disc diameter, arbor, backing-pad rating and grinder speed. Never run the coated abrasive disc without its required support.
Can a flap disc replace a grinding wheel?
Sometimes, but not universally. A coarse flap disc can remove welds and stock while leaving a more controlled surface, but a bonded grinding wheel may still be preferred for heavy beveling or rapid removal. Follow the abrasive manufacturer's application guidance.
Which abrasive leaves the smoothest finish?

Is a Type 27 flap disc the same as a Type 27 grinding wheel?
No. Type 27 describes a flat or depressed-centre geometry, not identical construction. A flap disc uses overlapping coated-abrasive flaps, while a bonded grinding wheel is a thick rigid wheel. Their mounting requirements, feel and applications differ.
Which option should be used on stainless steel?
Use an abrasive explicitly rated for stainless steel and select its grit and grain for the task. Keep stainless abrasives separate from carbon-steel work when iron contamination could affect corrosion resistance or appearance.
Can the same abrasive be used on steel and stainless steel?
Only if the product is specified for both materials. Even then, a disc already used on carbon steel can transfer iron to stainless steel. Use dedicated, clearly identified abrasives when contamination control matters.
