Batch & Separation Bowl FAQs

Common questions about the Polar FM-BB and FM-BIS bowl series.

What's the difference between FM-BB batch bowls and FM-BIS internal separation bowls?
FM-BB models are standard batch bowls: you stop the machine, open the unload door, and manually collect finished parts while the media stays in the bowl. FM-BIS models include a built-in internal separation gate that diverts finished parts into a discharge bin while the media stays in the bowl and recirculates — without stopping the machine. FM-BIS significantly increases throughput and reduces manual handling, making it the right choice for recurring high-volume production runs. FM-BB is better for lower volumes, mixed-part runs, or applications where manual inspection between batches is needed.
Why does the FM-BIS-03 include a Variable Speed Drive (VFD) as standard?
Precise amplitude control is critical for the internal separation mechanism to reliably divert parts at the FM-BIS-03's capacity. The VFD ships as standard on the 3 cu ft model; on larger FM-BIS models (05, 10, 20), the machine's greater mass makes the separation geometry less speed-sensitive so the VFD is offered as an option instead.
What media types are compatible with these bowls?
Both FM-BB and FM-BIS bowls are compatible with ceramic deburring media, plastic polishing media, and steel burnishing media. The 90-durometer hot-poured urethane lining handles steel shot loads without premature wear. We can recommend the right media shape, size, and compound for your specific part, material, and target finish — just mention this in your quote request.
What automation options are available?
Available upgrades include: Compound & Water Dosing System (FM-DP-3C), Variable Speed Drive (VFD), Pneumatics for Lid, Pneumatics for Media Unload Door, Pneumatic Separation System (manual pushbuttons, no VFD), PLC System with HMI (VFD included), PLC System with Push Buttons (VFD included), and full Auto-Unload with Reverse Flyweight Pneumatic Separation + Gate Clearing (PLC required). These options can reduce labor to near-zero for continuous high-volume runs.
How long does a typical vibratory finishing cycle take?
Cycle times depend on part material, initial surface condition, media type, and required finish. Typical ranges: light deburring of aluminum machined parts — 20 to 45 minutes; heavy deburring of steel castings — 60 to 120 minutes; burnishing to a bright finish — 30 to 90 minutes. Wet finishing with compound reduces time vs. dry. We can estimate cycle time for your specific application during the quoting process.
What is the lead time and how do I order?
Lead time is 6–10 weeks after receipt of order (ARO). These are built-to-order machines. Freight is quoted separately based on your delivery location. Use the Request a Quote form above, or call us at 905-361-7999 — we'll send a formal quote within 1 business day.
