Replacement dust collector cartridge filters ready for measurement and cross-reference

How to Measure a Dust Collector Cartridge Filter

Exit code: 0 Wall time: 0.5 seconds Output:

A replacement cartridge can be only a fraction of an inch off and still fail to seat, seal or clear the collector's mounting hardware. Learning how to measure a dust collector cartridge filter helps prevent incorrect cross-references, return freight and unplanned downtime.

This guide shows how to record round and oval cartridge dimensions, identify end-cap and gasket details, document the filter with useful photos and prepare the information needed for a replacement or custom-size quote.

Quick answer: Record the collector manufacturer and model, current filter number, cartridge shape, outside diameter, inside diameter, overall length, both end caps and gasket location. For oval filters, record maximum width and height as well as length.

Measure in more than one place, avoid damaged areas and do not round to a nominal size before sending the dimensions.

Tools and Information to Gather First

Use a tape measure for the first check and calipers when a more precise reading is practical. A straightedge helps identify the true end-cap plane, and a phone camera provides a visual record of details that are difficult to describe.

  • Tape measure with clear inch and millimetre markings
  • Calipers for gasket, flange or opening details when required
  • Straightedge for checking overall length and projecting features
  • Marker and paper labels for identifying each end of the filter
  • Phone or camera for overall, end-cap and gasket photos
  • Collector nameplate, model and serial-number information
  • Existing filter label or part number, even when it is incomplete
Before removing a filter: Isolate the collector according to the facility's approved lockout and maintenance procedures. Account for the hazards of the collected material and use the required protective equipment. Do not handle an unknown, combustible, toxic or reactive dust without the correct process-specific controls.

How to Measure a Round Dust Collector Cartridge Filter

Place the removed cartridge on a clean, stable surface. If the media contains hazardous dust, use the handling and containment method required by your facility. Label the top and bottom before cleaning or moving any loose parts.

1

Identify the cartridge and collector

Photograph the collector nameplate and filter label. Record the manufacturer, collector model, serial number, current filter number and quantity installed.

2

Measure the outside diameter

Measure across the widest outside points without compressing the pleats or support screen. Take readings in at least two directions and at both ends.

3

Measure the inside diameter

Measure the clear opening, not the outside of the end cap. Record necks, venturis, flanges or steps that create a second opening diameter.

4

Measure the overall length

Measure from the outer face of one end cap to the outer face of the other. State whether the reading includes a gasket, flange, bolt or protruding feature.

5

Describe each end cap

Record whether each end is open or closed. Measure flange diameter, hole pattern, neck height and retaining features when present. Photograph each end straight on.

6

Document the gasket

Identify which end carries the gasket, whether it sits inside or outside the opening, and its profile, width and thickness. Note any damage that may change the reading.

7

Record media and support details

Note the media description on the label, outer and inner screens, pleat direction and any special coating, grounding feature or conductive component.

8

Repeat and compare

Repeat key measurements away from crushed or corroded areas. Compare the result with the collector model and part number before treating it as final.

How to Measure an Oval Cartridge Filter

An oval cartridge requires more than one outside measurement. Record the maximum width across the long axis, maximum height across the short axis and overall length. Then measure both openings, end-cap profiles and gasket location.

  1. Measure the maximum outside width at several points.
  2. Measure the maximum outside height without compressing the media.
  3. Measure the overall cartridge length from end-cap face to end-cap face.
  4. Record each opening's width and height independently.
  5. Photograph both ends square to the cartridge so the flange and gasket shape are visible.
  6. Confirm the collector series and existing filter number whenever possible.

Oval cartridges that appear visually similar can use different gasket profiles, mounting features or media. Compare all available data before ordering.

Cartridge Filter Measurement Worksheet

Use the same unit throughout the worksheet. If you provide both imperial and metric dimensions, identify which set came directly from the measurement and which was converted. One inch equals exactly 25.4 millimetres, but unnecessary rounding can hide an important difference.

Common Cartridge Filter Measurement Mistakes

Rounding too early

A reading near 13.8 inches should not automatically become 14 inches. Send the actual measurement and let the cross-reference determine whether it represents a nominal size.

Including the gasket without saying so

Gaskets compress and can extend beyond the end cap. State whether the overall length includes the uncompressed gasket and photograph the relationship between the two.

Measuring a damaged area

A crushed screen, swollen gasket or bent end cap can produce a false dimension. Measure multiple locations and identify damage in the photos.

Sending only one end-cap photo

Open/open and open/closed cartridges may share outer dimensions. Photograph both ends square-on and include any flange, bolt hole or retaining detail.

Matching by size but ignoring media

Dimensions confirm fitment, not filtration performance. Record the media, process dust and desired efficiency. Review our MERV ratings guide when particle-size efficiency is part of the specification.

Cartridge Filter Measurement FAQ

Do cartridge filter measurements include the gasket?

They may or may not. Record the rigid end-cap-to-end-cap length separately when possible, then state the uncompressed gasket thickness and whether your overall reading includes it.

How precise should dust collector filter dimensions be?

Record the most precise repeatable measurement your tools and filter condition allow. Do not force a measurement into a nominal whole-inch size. Multiple readings and clear photos help resolve small differences.

What is the difference between outside and inside diameter?

Outside diameter is the widest dimension across the cartridge body or end cap. Inside diameter is the clear opening through an open end. Both can affect fitment and mounting.

How do I measure an oval cartridge filter?

Measure maximum width, maximum height and overall length. Also measure each opening and document end-cap, flange and gasket profiles with square-on photos.

Can I order using only the collector model?

The collector model is a valuable starting point, but configurations can change. Confirm the current filter number, dimensions, end caps, gasket and media whenever possible.

Can Machinist's Vault help identify an unlisted filter?

Yes. Send the model, existing part number, completed measurements, photos and process details through the custom cartridge request form.
