Record the shape

Identify whether the filter is round, oval or another profile. For oval cartridges, record both the maximum width and maximum height.

Measure the outside

Measure the outside diameter at more than one point. Avoid crushed pleats, bent screens and damaged end caps that can distort the reading.

Record the clear inside diameter or opening dimensions. Note any neck, flange, venturi or mounting feature that reduces the opening.

MERV compares minimum particle-removal efficiency across defined particle-size ranges. It helps distinguish media performance, especially when fine-particle capture matters. It does not describe physical fit, gasket leakage, pulse-cleaning behaviour, total system airflow or the hazards of the collected material.

Inspect or replace cartridges when you observe:

  • Pressure drop remains above the normal operating range after the approved cleaning procedure.
  • Capture airflow at the hood or enclosure has declined after other system restrictions are ruled out.
  • Dust appears downstream of the filter or around a sealing surface.
  • Pleats are torn, wet, oil-saturated, collapsed or permanently packed with dust.
  • End caps, support screens, gaskets or mounting features are damaged or corroded.
  • Pulse cleaning no longer produces a meaningful recovery in differential pressure.
  • The process material, production rate or operating conditions have changed.

When replacing a set, inspect the collector for leaks, failed valves, damaged cages or supports, blocked hoppers and faulty pressure sensing. A new cartridge cannot correct a mechanical or airflow problem elsewhere in the system.
