Open/Open vs. Open/Closed Dust Collector Cartridge Filters

Open/open and open/closed cartridge filters describe the end-cap configuration, not the filtration efficiency. The right choice is the one that matches the collector's mounting system, sealing surfaces, airflow path and cartridge dimensions.

An end-cap mismatch can prevent installation, create a bypass leak or leave the cartridge unsupported even when the outside diameter and length appear correct.

Quick answer: An open/open cartridge filter has an opening through both end caps. An open/closed cartridge filter has one open end and one sealed end. Either configuration may use different gaskets, liners, cap materials and mounting details, so the terms alone do not identify a complete replacement.

What Do Open/Open and Open/Closed Mean?

Both end caps have a centre opening

Air and mounting hardware can pass through the centre from either end. Depending on the collector, the cartridge may slide over a support tube, seat between two sealing surfaces or use a retaining system through the core.

Do not assume both ends use identical gaskets. Some open/open cartridges seal at one end only, while others require a gasket or flange detail at both ends.

Open/Closed

One end is open and the opposite end is sealed

The open end normally connects to the clean-air plenum or mounting surface. The closed end blocks flow through the far cap and may be plain or include a mounting hole, insert, hook, stud or other collector-specific feature.

A closed cap is not automatically interchangeable with another closed cap. Shape, depth and hardware matter.

Important: Open/open and open/closed describe geometry. They do not tell you the media type, MERV rating, temperature limit, dust compatibility, flame-retardant properties or whether the cartridge is approved for a combustible-dust application.

What the End-Cap Description Does Not Tell You

A listing that says only "open/open cartridge filter" or "open/closed cartridge filter" is incomplete. The same end-cap arrangement can appear on cartridges built for very different collectors and dusts. Treat the configuration as one field on the replacement specification, not as the product identity.

It does not define the sealing method

Gaskets can be bonded to a cap face, placed around an outside lip or fitted inside a recess. Their material, width, thickness and compression determine whether the clean and dirty sides remain separated. A cartridge with the correct openings but the wrong gasket can create an invisible bypass path.

It does not define the media or treatment

Cellulose blends, spunbond polyester and surface-treated or nanofiber media can share the same cap geometry. Antistatic, oleophobic, water-resistant and flame-retardant options require separate confirmation. Match these properties to the dust and the collector's operating conditions.

It does not define structural support

The inner liner, outer support, pleat spacing and banding help the cartridge resist airflow, pulse cleaning and handling loads. A cartridge may fit dimensionally but deform or clean poorly if its construction is not appropriate for the system.

It does not confirm collector approval

Collector families can use revisions that look similar from outside. Confirm the machine model, serial information, installed hardware and any manufacturer-approved replacement specification. This is especially important where emissions, combustible dust or process safety controls depend on the collector.

How to Identify the End-Cap Configuration

  1. Remove and isolate the existing cartridge safely. Follow the collector manufacturer's shutdown, lockout and dust-handling procedures.
  2. Look straight through the core. If both ends have a centre opening, it is open/open. If the opposite cap is sealed, it is open/closed.
  3. Photograph both ends. Include the full cap, gasket and any retaining hardware in separate, well-lit photos.
  4. Record the gasket location. Note whether it sits on the open cap face, outside lip, inside lip or both ends.
  5. Inspect the closed end closely. Record bolt holes, threaded inserts, studs, hooks, recesses and grounding details.
  6. Capture the existing part number. A readable label or stamped number can accelerate cross-reference work, but measurements should still be verified.

Measurements Needed for a Reliable Match

  • Outside diameter or oval width and height
  • Overall length from the outermost cap surfaces
  • Open-end inside diameter at each end
  • End-cap outside diameter, depth and material
  • Gasket location, width, thickness and profile
  • Closed-cap hole, insert or mounting-feature dimensions
  • Inner and outer liner construction
  • Part number, collector manufacturer and collector model

Measure in more than one location when a used cartridge is distorted. Do not include a compressed gasket as though it were part of the rigid end-cap dimension.

Correct orientation and even gasket contact are essential. Never force a cartridge that does not align with the mounting system.

Common Cartridge End-Cap Ordering Mistakes

Matching only the outside diameter and length

Two cartridges can share the same major dimensions while using different inside diameters, gaskets or end-cap geometry.

Calling every sealed end a flat closed cap

A shallow flat cap, deep recessed cap and cap with a mounting insert are different configurations even though all are closed.

Ignoring airflow and clean-side sealing

A filter that physically enters the collector can still leak if the gasket lands outside the sealing surface or the cap leaves a bypass path.

Choosing media from the end-cap name

Not unless the collector manufacturer or a qualified filter specialist confirms the change. The sealed end may be required to direct airflow and complete the clean-side seal.
